Chistabino is the variety of Aragonese, a Romance dialect descended from Latin, like Spanish, still spoken in the Valley of Gistau, bordering on France and formed by the River Cinqueta, in the central part of the Spanish Pyrenees (Province of Huesca). Although it is spoken mainly in the village of Gistaín (c. 240 inhabitants; c. 1400 m above sea-level, near latitude 42°35′), and is fairly well preserved by the older generations there, fluent speakers can still be found also in the nearby locality of San Juan. The other inhabited villages in the valley (Plan, Serveto, Sin and Saravillo) have suffered much greater degrees of erosion by Castilian (Standard Spanish), which has increased its influence through much improved communications, leading to the development of tourism in the area and emigration by the young in search of greater prosperity. The remaining village, Señes, has been uninhabited since 1970.

How much Aragonese is still spoken remains largely an unknown quantity. Naturally, establishing the number of speakers of any variety begs the question of what speaking a language actually means, and the picture is often clouded by the political interests of particular groups, as is the case in Aragon. The strong claim to the continued widespread use of Aragonese made by such associations as the Consello d"a Fabla in Huesca is counterbalanced by that of the more reactionary, sceptical academics at the University of Saragossa, who maintain that Aragonese varieties, ignoring the Catalan of Aragon spoken right down La Franja, the transition area between Aragon and Catalonia, now only survive in certain pockets of resistance across the north of Huesca. This paper will attempt to provide a summary of the available facts and report on some of the author"s own findings during his more recent trips to Aragon. Keywords Spanish dialectology, Aragonese, standardization of Aragonese, vitality of Aragonese

This paper gives a full description of the phonetics and phonology of Traditional Cockney and Popular London speech, treating these varieties as constituting a continuum rather than two separate dialects. Exemplification of the vowels, diphthongs and consonants is provided, both in isolate words and in connected speech, along with their range of variation. The frequencies of the vowels have been charted on the basis of the pronunciation of three elderly male speakers. Regarding the consonants, there are detailed observations on the features typically associated with the linguistic varieties examined: strong aspiration of unvoiced plosives, glottalization, H-dropping, L-vocalization and TH-fronting. A section on prosody provides coverage of lexical stress, rhythm and intonation. The paper takes into account up-to-date research on these phenomena, but does not deal with the most recent vowel shifts, some of which form part of Multi-cultural London English.

This article looks at the way culture is represented in 3 commonly used course books of Dutch as a foreign language. According to the author, everyday culture of the regions where Dutch is spoken, is presented from a nationalistic point of view, i.e. it is limited to either cultural, historical and social aspects of The Netherlands or cultural, historical and social aspects of the Flemish Community in Belgium. The existence of the other region or country where the same language is spoken is not only ignored but at times even portrayed wrongfully which has its logically negative effect upon the students" interpretation and can lead to prejudice and the teachers using those course books.

Most of the fiction that was produced by soldier-writers after the American War in Vietnam has been characterized as therapeutic, with its main objective understood to be healing the wounds caused by the traumatic experience of war. This approach has tended to individualize the experience of particular soldier-writers and to conceive of their fiction as the substitute for psychoanalytic therapy, cancelling, in the same maneuver, its political agency. By emphasizing the individual process of overcoming 'Post Traumatic Stress Disorder', the critical work analyzing the production of these authors has, intentionally or not, obscured the larger political project by which these writers were literally putting their bodies on the line. In their physical and psychological fragmentation, those bodies became the locus of the struggle to establish a new definition of national identity, at a time when the concept had become unstable to say the least. The aim of this article is to bring back to the fore of the study of US Vietnam War cultural production its emphasis on the politics of dissent.

The article shows that Felipe Alaíz de Pablo (1887-1959), considered by prominent fellow revolutionaries of his time as the most important Spanish propagandist of the Anarchist Movement in the first half of the 20th Century, was also the first promoter in Spain of the works of Multatuli (1820-1887), the most important writer in 19th Century Dutch literature. The article describes Alaíz's admiration for Multatuli through his published Spanish translation of a selection of his writings, Páginas Selectas de Multatuli, and through the influence of Multatuli's work in Alaíz's novel Quinet and his short story Maria se me fuga de la novella. It also shows that Alaíz's enthusiasm for Multatuli was orally transferred through the speech 'Charla con las juventudes libertarias' given in Mexico D.H. in 1944 by one of Alaíz's colleagues. Although Alaíz did not translate Multatuli's most famous novel, Max Havelaar, or The Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company (1860), the article claims that he deserves to be recognized as the one who introduced Multatuli in Spain, a fact which has so far been ignored in Multatuli studies.

Prepositional phrases are the commonest kind of postmodification in all registers of English (Biber et al. 1999: 634). The locative ones that can be expanded into a defining relative clause (the books [which are] on the table) are usually expressed by such a construction in Spanish (los libros que están encima de la mesa) or by a phrase introduced by de (los libros de encima de la mesa). Wonder (1979) argues that Spanish allows locative phrases with prepositions other than de in the case of"situaciones"activas"" (el aterrizaje en pleno campo) as against"situaciones estáticas" (*el sofá en la sala), and if the phrase can be given an adverbial rather than, or in addition to, an adjectival interpretation (el ruido en la calle), especially if that phrase implies an alternative location for an object or contrast with another similar object (el sofá en la sala contigua). This paper further investigates this claim and looks at Spanish equivalents of English postmodifying prepositional phrases in general, while proposing an explanation for the choice of these different structures in Spanish based on considerations of lexical density.

Whereas most research on child second language acquisition has focused on the oral production of children, studies are needed to show their initial writing development in a second language. This paper aims to shed some light on this process, focusing on the English writing development of a native Spanish speaker enrolled in a two-way immersion program in the United States. Data for this presentation come from a longitudinal, national study which involves 484 students in 11 programs across the country. In this paper, we will present a case study of one of the students in the project, from the beginning of third grade until the end of fifth grade. The student's writing samples will be discussed using an analytic rubric developed for the project. This rubric addresses three major aspects of writing -composition, grammar and mechanics- and provides a clear framework for investigating changes in writing ability over time.

This study examines the effect of 'length of stay' on the written and oral development of two groups of Spanish-speaking students learning English in the UK through the Erasmus Program. Written and oral data were collected from 46 participants by means of a composition and an oral narrative after stays of two months (25 students) or three months abroad (21 students) in the target language country. The learners' written and oral samples were analyzed in terms of fluency, accuracy, lexical richness and complexity. The results of the statistical analyses suggest that there are no significant differences in the gains made by the two groups of learners; therefore, an additional month abroad may not be long enough to produce significant differences in learners' second language development in terms of the measures of written and oral production considered in this study.

[eng] The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of proficiency level and time distribution of instructional hours on adult second language learners' written production. Two English as a foreign language programs were considered: "regular" and "intensive". A total of 292 writing samples from 83 intermediate-level learners and 63 advanced learners were analyzed by means of different measures of fluency, complexity, and accuracy. Additionally, a group of native English speakers (N = 29) was included to provide baseline data. The results of the statistical analyses suggest positive effects of time concentration for the development of fluency and lexical complexity at the intermediate level. The results of the students at the advanced level are discussed on the basis of their performance with respect to the native English speakers. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of proficiency level and time distribution of instructional hours on adult second language learners' written production.

For this research, six public high schools in Catalonia were selected whose students had obtained outstanding results on the English test in the PAU in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Interviews and questionnaires were used to learn about teachers' and students' attributions of success as well about their more general views on English language teaching in their schools and in Catalonia. Data show success is often attributed to both internal and external factors and rarely to methodological factors. Also, both teachers and students are well aware of the limitations of teaching and learning English in their context and are able to articulate valuable ideas for change.

[eng] The goal of this essay is to propose a reading of Beckett's theatre and novels based on the analysis of the endlessness of his works. The endlessness is considered as an indication of the referencial opening of the sign and therefore as an indication of the indecisiveness of meaning; continual interpretation becomes thus unavoidable.

[eng] This paper reports on a preliminary study of the speech of the intonation of a variety of Aragonese: Chistabino, spoken in the valley of Gistau, especially in Gistaín, in the Province of Huesca, Spain. This first approach to the intonation of Chistabino suggests that unmarked statements, as in Spanish, are said on a terminal fall, unmarked pronominal questions are frequently pronounced on a rise (prototypically a fall in Spanish), and unmarked yes-no questions are often said with a rise-fall pattern (usually a rise in Spanish, if unmarked). So it appears that Chistabino uses rising contours and complex tunes more often than Spanish. Non-final nuclei, as in Spanish, tend to be performed on or form part of a rise. Where alternative patterns are used, there is some pragmatic nuance (insistence, politeness, uncertainty, etc.). Use of the fall-rise in yes-no questions has also been found in Asturias, Galicia and Caribbean Spanish, while in Castilian it is marked.

Jean Stafford's short story "The Interior Castle" (1946) and Sylvia Plath's "Face Lift" and "The Plaster", written in the early 1960s but published posthumously in Crossing the Water (1971), dwell on a theme which is rarely tackled in Postwar American literature: plastic surgery. Using a markedly mnemonic tone, both authors trace in detail the passive submission of female bodies to male (re)construction. While the history of women in early Cold War America is usually associated with the patriarchal mystifying of housewifery, the myth of ideal, domestic femininity was also intimately related to bodily beauty. The demand for physical "perfection" which resulted from constructing women as, primarily, objects of male desire was mirrored in popular magazines, such as Ladies' Home Journal, which endorsed women's seeking medical aid to model themselves into "ideal" sexual mates (Meyerowitz in Meyerowitz ed., 244). Women's submission to the notion that they should use any means necessary to become aesthetic objects to be appraised by men was thus represented as desirable. In this paper, I shall trace how both Stafford and Plath adopted a confessional style of writing in the abovementioned pieces in order to denounce the cultural construction of women as passive bodies to be moulded at will, instead of as active, thinking subjects. I shall argue that by reproducing the recollections and thoughts of the women being stitched, sewn and bandaged in their pieces, both authors articulated an alternative protofeminist aesthetics based on the beauty of what Stafford described as "inscrutable intelligence".

This article explores the case of Barcelona as paradigmatic global city in such transnational productions as Vicky Cristina Barcelona by Woody Allen (2008) and Biutiful by Alejandro González Iñárritu (2010). Allen"s film shows the extreme dilution that national and linguistic identity undergoes under foreign eyes in its rendition of a"hip Barcelona" for tourists"invaded" by transnational subjects in search of bourgeois pleasures. Maybe in pursuit of a more"real" city, Iñárritu"s Biutiful moves to the Barcelona of the immigrants and the undocumented, a transnational and paradoxical location inhabited by those who need to cross borders in order to survive. Through reference to the work of Manuel Castells, Saskia Sassen, Neil Smith and Michel De Certeau among others, we argue that neither of these representations of the city is more real or unreal than the other. In their drastically divergent ways, both films contribute their external perspectives to the imaginary construction of Barcelona as a fascinating global city and can be seen as a dyptich of a transnational Barcelona. Further, they contribute to the ongoing debate about the polarization between the local and the global, the construction of urban boarders inside cities through gentrification, the transformation of the places we (would like to) inhabit, and the translation of all these into visual terms.

This paper reviews a selection of doctoral theses on language learning and teaching completed in Spain between 2008 and 2010. A total of 16 theses have been identified as representative - in terms of the topics under investigation and the methodology employed - of the doctoral research undertaken in Spain. Current topics include the development of speaking skills, motivation, learner autonomy, pragmatics, learning context, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), language learning by immigrant populations and, especially, classroom teaching. A variety of research methods were employed in the theses under review, and while most of them focus on adult learners, some also consider children. The interest of researchers in these topics is consistent with the challenges faced by language teachers in Spain, as well as with the new realities of teaching in this country, with its recently-arrived immigrant population, the expansion of CLIL programmes and the use of new technologies.

This Dossier collects seven essays which examine the possibilities and the limitations of the precept 'Lov your neighbor as yourself', a precpt that is central to both Hebrew and Christian doctrines and teachings, and that also transcends religiosity as it is crucial in both secular and even 'postsecular' thinking and praxes.

In a deconstructive fashion, this paper analyses the Heideggerian concept of Bodenständigkeit ("rootedness") from the point of view of the Boden ("earth", "ground") in general, that is, before its diffraction as Bodenständigkeit and Bodenlösigkeit ("uprootedness"). Whereas Heidegger makes of the concepts of "description" and "expression" two species of the genre Bodenständigkeit, we will proceed otherwise, and derive them from the general concept of Bodenlösigkeit ("uprootedness"). In this way, following the threads of the poetry of Kevin Hart, we will suggest that it is possible to affirm that all poetry is about finitude, contingency and destiny, both from the point of view of its form and of its content. In the course of our analysis, we will wonder about the role of identity and alterity in the construction of Australian identity.

Oftentimes popular culture depicts Hawaii as an ideal paradise, represented by images of '[p]alm trees, a distant mountain (frequently a smoking volcano), and a hula maiden, all surmounted by a splendid full moon' (Brown 1994). Such a picture clearly contrasts with the labour song quoted in the title of this article, which reflects the exploitation, mainly of Asian workers, in the sugar-cane plantation system the original basis for (white) American prosperity in the islands since the mid-nineteenth century. Philip Kan Gotanda's play, Ballad of Yachiyo, which premièred at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 1995, takes place within a Japanese community in early twentieth-century Hawaii. It is loosely based on the silenced story of the playwright's aunt who committed suicide for bringing shame to the family as a result of an extra-marital pregnancy. Gotanda considers that this particular work is not so much about politics, but about 'a tone' and a 'kind of beautiful sadness' (1997). Despite the author's words, Ballad of Yachiyo inevitably has embedded within a political message insofar as it makes references, for example, to working conditions in the sugar plantations, the formation of the first inter-ethnic (Japanese/Filipino) trade unions and the expectations of Japanese immigrants in search of the mythical paradise Hawaii was meant to be. That is, by recovering what was once a lost voice, Gotanda reconstructs part of his family's memory as forming part of Hawaii's recent history.

Critical discussion of Elizabeth Jolley's The Well (1986) has largely focused on issues of gender, but little has been said about the racial inscription of the novel. This lack is especially relevant when criticism, despite praising the author's experimentation with narrative technique and genre, tends to voice dissatisfaction with the novel's conclusion in medias res, which never solves the tension between a presumed return to the patriarchal norm and the voicing of liberating alternatives. This paper proposes a postcolonial perspective so as to come to terms with this dilemma, and argues that the text signals the impossibility of suppressing the Native from the contemporary Australian land and textscape, whose Gothic articulation in the uncanny shape of the male well-dweller haunts the novel's engagement with female empowerment. The female protagonist may only start overcoming a crippling gender discourse in the White postcolonial pastoralist setting by inscribing herself into 'Australianness'. Reconciling her body with the land is significantly staged in terms of an Aboriginal cosmogony, as it is a 'walkabout' that allows Hester to start controlling her body and story. Thus, The Well may be understood to be inconclusive because it struggles to map gender across race at a time of Aboriginal-exclusive multiculturalism. Written in the mid 1980s, it announces a point of inflection in thinking about nativenonnative relationships which would soon lead to attempts at 'Reconciliation' by mainstream Australia.

Catalonia, in common with other nations, has long been concerned with the question of identity and difference. Its problematic relationship with Spain has led to an emphasis on differentiating itself from its larger neighbour (if we are to accept, as most Spaniards do not, that Catalonia is not Spain), a situation complicated by the loss of the Spanish colonies of Cuba and The Philippines in 1898, and the Spanish Civil War and subsequent dictatorship from 1936 to 1976. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, the construction of a Catalan identity followed a similar route to that taken by other European nations such as England, Ireland and, indeed, Spain, including an emphasis on rural values, activities and the countryside, and the conversion of specifically local traditions into national past times. It is only in the last ten years or so that this model of Catalan identity has been recognised for what it is - a model constructed and encouraged for and by specific nationalist political interests. Ironically, Catalonia's identity abroad has also been constructed and manipulated for political purposes, but from quite a different perspective. Orwell's /Homage to Catalonia/ (1938) narrates an extremely blinkered version of the Spanish Civil War which has achieved iconic status as a result of cold war politics. Subsequent portrayals of the Spanish Civil War - Valentine Cunningham's /The Penguin Book of Spanish Civil War Verse/ (ed.), Penguin, 1980, or Ken Loach's 1995 film /Land and Freedom/ base their arguments unquestioningly on /Homage to Catalonia/, perpetuating a view of the nation's recent history that is both reductive and inaccurate.

This paper discusses the impact of translation on literary traditions and the sociological elements which contribute to the shift of the canon. The effort of translation to enlarge and enrich a literary system makes it a powerful tool for the introduction of new aesthetics and trends as well as the ideology implied in them. A translation of a literary work is, in fact, a criticism of that work, a point of view on the author and the text. Poggioli's idea that translation is an interpretative art, like music, half way between reproduction or craft and a complete original creation is vital for this approach.

Affection is perceived as something natural, pre-existing Culture and, therefore, free form discursive constructions. However, insofar as reality is mediated, if not given existence by language, human relationships are inevitably fashioned by narratives. Romance fictions and in particular heterosexual, interracial love stories have been used in U.S. popular culture as a means of promoting American democratic values of racial harmony at home and abroad. This will be exemplified by analyzing James A. Michener's 1953 novel Sayonara together with Joshua Logan's 1957 film adaptation.

Cooking is a gender marker. Just as the best chefs in the world are traditionally men, post-hard-boiled literary detectives such as Vázquez Montalban's Carvalho, or Robert B. Parker's Spenser are gourmet cooks, while George Pelecanos's sleuthing protagonists were as often as not brought up in short order Greek diners and know their way around a kitchen. Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins is quite capable of putting together a nutritious meal for his family, as is James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux. Sadly, in confirmation of the gender divide, the same cannot be said for women detectives. While Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski will reluctantly and with much griping put a simple meal on the table if absolutely forced to, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone and Linda Barnes's Carlotta Carlyle would not be seen dead slaving over a hot stove and subsist mainly on takeaway pizzas and hamburgers. Indeed, Kinsey Millhone would probably have died of malnutrition halfway through the alphabet if it were not for her neighbour, Henry, a retired baker, who regularly supplies her with decent home-cooked meals. Authors such as Vázquez Montalban and Robert B. Parker delight in providing recipes for their readers which are lovingly put together by their protagonists (especially in Spenser's case whose culinary prowess is consistently contrasted to his girlfriend's utter inability even to slice an onion), or by their male friends. In 1999 Vázquez Montalban published Las recetas de Carvalho which achieved such popularity it was reissued in 2004 by Planeta. It is not known whether any women detectives or their authors might claim as much. Clearly something is afoot. The sharpest knives in the detectives' kitchen drawers are wielded by men, their traditional solitary nature ensuring the broth remains unspoiled and the villains well grilled. Overcompensation for gender stereotyping by both sides would seem an easy, half-baked explanation. Is it really that simple?

It is nowadays evident that the West's civilising, eugenic zeal have had a devastating impact on all aspects of the Indigenous-Australian community tissue, not least the lasting trauma of the Stolen Generations. The latter was the result of the institutionalisation, adoption, fostering, virtual slavery and sexual abuse of thousands of mixed-descent children, who were separated at great physical and emotional distances from their Indigenous kin, often never to see them again. The object of State and Federal policies of removal and mainstream absorption and assimilation between 1930 and 1970, these lost children only saw their plight officially recognised in 1997, when the Bringing Them Home report was published by the Federal government. The victims of forced separation and migration, they have suffered serious trans-generational problems of adaptation and alienation in Australian society, which have been not only documented from the outside in the aforementioned report but also given shape from the inside of and to Indigenous-Australian literature over the last three decades. The following addresses four Indigenous Western-Australian writers within the context of the Stolen Generations, and deals particularly with the semi-biographical fiction by the Nyoongar author Kim Scott, which shows how a very liminal hybrid identity can be firmly written in place yet. Un-writing past policies of physical and 'epistemic' violence on the Indigenous Australian population, his fiction addresses a way of approaching Australianness from an Indigenous perspective as inclusive, embracing transculturality within the nation-space.

Despite the widespread belief that the world grows increasingly violent, Steven Pinker's 2011 volume The Better Angels of Our Nature convincingly argues that the opposite is true. Tracing the history of humanity from its origins to the present day, Pinker shows how violence has declined, and that strong, stable government is the principal reason for this happening. The book briefly touches on the way literature may play a part in the reduction of violence through the transmission of empathy - the way in which stories about other people, even fictional people, teach us to comprehend more closely our fellow human beings. This article expands on Pinker's assertion and suggests that violence has also declined in literature, or become increasingly unacceptable to the point of rejection.

Monsters have always enjoyed a significant presence in the human imagination, and religion was instrumental in replacing the physical horror they engendered with that of a moral threat. Zombies, however, are amoral - their motivation purely instinctive and arbitrary, yet they are, perhaps, the most loathed of all contemporary monsters. One explanation for this lies in the theory of the uncanny valley, proposed by robotics engineer Masahiro Mori. According to the theory, we reserve our greatest fears for those things which seem most human, yet are not - such as dead bodies. Such a reaction is most likely a survival mechanism to protect us from danger and disease - a mechanism even more essential when the dead rise up and walk. From their beginnings zombies have reflected western societies' greatest fears - be they of revolutionary Haitians, women, or communists. In recent years the rise in the popularity of the zombie in films, books and television series reflects our fears for the planet, the economy, and of death itself

Indigenous-Australian fiction has experimented with subgenres of the Fantastic in various ways to secure an empowering location from which to address post/colonial dispossession. In the mid-1990s, the Australian writer and critic Mudrooroo, formerly known as Colin Johnson, proposed Maban Reality as a genre denomination for fiction which introduces the reader to the powerful and empowering universe of the Aboriginal maban or shaman, also known as the Dreaming. Mudrooroo's coining of Maban Reality was a way of establishing an Australian variant of Magic Realism which defied a European epistemology of the universe, engaging and enabling Dreamtime spirituality as a solid pillar of Aboriginal reality. Mudrooroo had already experimented with a postcolonial reversal of the Gothic, a dark version of the Fantastic, in the first of his Tasmanian quintet, Dr Wooreddy's Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World (1983), but left its gloomy resignation to a dire Indigenous fate under colonial rule behind for the upbeat Master of the Ghost Dreaming (1993). Yet, as the result of a deep personal crisis¿believed not to have an Aboriginal bloodline, in the mid-1990s he was barred from the tribal affiliation he had long claimed¿Mudrooroo resorted to the gloominess of the postcolonial Gothic again in a vampire trilogy to reflect on the devastating impact of colonisation on Australian identity at large. This essay comments on the ways in which he has reflected on the present state of Australianness by rewriting Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Earl Lovelace's fiction can be said to, ultimately, work as a force to give validity to the Creole culture created out of the coming together of many worlds in the Caribbean. As in his novel The Dragon Can't Dance, which celebrated those Creole art forms around Carnival, in his next novel, The Wine of Astonishment (1982), i Lovelace celebrates yet another Creole institution, the Trinidadian African-derived church of the Spiritual Baptists. In the novel the Spiritual Baptist church, made to be seen as the darkness from which natives needed to be weaned by colonial authorities, is celebrated and acknowledged as one of the basis that allowed for the creation of a new society away from the colonial narrowness. In The Wine of Astonishment, the resistance put up by Spiritual Baptist practitioners, in spite of the prohibition and violence endured, is acknowledged, celebrated and recognised as one of the milestones in Caribbean history. This article will trace, as reflected in the novel, the evolution of the Spiritual Baptist church, and will analyse its symbolical relation to another art form created in the New World: the steel pan movement. All in all, this article will examine the survival of this Trinidadian African-derived church together with the emergence of the steelpan as two of the most salient testimonies of cultural survival and creolisation of the nation.

A robust finding of studies investigating the Aspect Hypothesis is that learners at early stages of acquisition show a strong preference for using the progressive aspect as associated with activity verbs. As they advance in their acquisition of the second or foreign language, learners move from this prototypical association to associations traditionally considered to be more peripheral (e.g.-ing with accomplishments or achievements). Within this framework, the goal of this paper is to provide further evidence from groups of learners with different proficiency levels with regard to the acquisition of progressive aspect by tutored learners of English who are bilingual Catalan-Spanish. This is done by eliciting data by means of two different task types and by looking at both tokens and types. Our results are consistent with previous research according to which-ing morphology is closely associated with durative lexical aspect, although not necessarily with activity predicates. The study also shows that the type of task has an influence on the frequency and the distribution of learners" progressive forms.

The Majorcan poetess Maria Antònia Salvà translated to catalan, during the first thirty of XX century, numerous poems from Giovanni Pascoli's works. Altough a large number of them remained unpublished, these poetic version were really important to the Hispanic fortune of Pascoli, because they constitute the first and only translations of his poems to an Iberian language before the Spanish Civil War. This paper collects historical informations about them and explains the history of their composition and publication. Lastly it analyses some translation by the linguistic and stylistic perspective with a special attention to the fonosymbolic value of the poems.

Throughout the history of the hermeneutics of the lirical work defined as canzonieri, autobiographical fiction has largely proved to be both a clue and a hindrance to their sound criticism. This has been very much the fortune of Leopardi's Canti, mostly seen as a sheer diagram of the author's career. First part of an eventual series of two, the article amphasizes the role of the lyric-self as structurer and coherer in Leopardi's collected poems, and drives attention to its paradoxical nature as a source of poetic creation.

With this article it is my aim to determine to what extent discourse analysis (from a conversational point of view) is applied to language teaching research (from the point of view of the communicative approach). The sphere of application of discourse analysis is invoked by the omnipresence of verbal exchange (conversation) in second language classes, which may be seen as paradigmatic situations of language contact. Conversation contains specific bifunctional strategies that operate simultaneously as learning/teaching and communicative strategies. Among these bifunctional strategies, code-switching represents one of the most important. I will present a specific type of code-switching, conversational code-switching, which will be illustrated through a side-by-side presentation of examples taken from bilingual and exolingual contexts. Finally, I will analyze the examples in order to draw some conclusions.

The article reconstructs the diverse phases of a 19th century linguistic controversy between the promoters of an orthographic reformation of Napolitan based on contemporary speech, and the defenders of the rules of writing, derived from the classics, pertaining to the tradition of written dialect. It also attempts to individualise the extra-linguistic reasons that influence the position of the many and varied groups opposed to one another, as well as the implications of this debate and the new perspective that it opened up both for Italian and for the dialects, once political unification had taken place.

This paper analyses the effects of manipulating the cognitive complexity of L2 oral tasks on language production. It specifically focuses on self-repairs, which are taken as a measure of accuracy since they denote both attention to form and an attempt at being accurate. By means of a repeated measures de- sign, 42 lower-intermediate students were asked to perform three different tasks types (a narrative, and instruction-giving task, and a decision-making task) for which two degrees of cognitive complexity were established. The narrative task was manipulated along +/− Here-and-Now, an instruction-giving task ma- nipulated along +/− elements, and the decision-making task which is manipu- lated along +/− reasoning demands. Repeated measures ANOVAs are used for the calculation of differences between degrees of complexity and among task types. One-way ANOVA are used to detect potential differences between low- proficiency and high-proficiency participants. Results show an overall effect of Task Complexity on self-repairs behavior across task types, with different be- haviors existing among the three task types. No differences are found between the self-repair behavior between low and high proficiency groups. Results are discussed in the light of theories of cognition and L2 performance (Robin- son 2001a, 2001b, 2003, 2005, 2007), L1 and L2 language production models (Levelt 1989, 1993; Kormos 2000, 2006), and attention during L2 performance (Skehan 1998; Robinson, 2002).

The rediscovery of the manuscript containing a translation by Maragall of Vita Nuova XIX sheds new light on Maragall's Danteism and helps in clarifying certain obscure points in a version published by the journal Lletra, which never formed part of the Obres Completes. The current study places Maragall's version within the environment of the Catalan pre- Raphaelite movement, examines the textual solutions put forward by the Catalan writer and sets out proposals for editing the work.

In this paper we describe a taxonomy of task demands which distinguishes between Task Complexity, Task Condition and Task Difficulty. We then describe three theoretical claims and predictions of the Cognition Hypothesis (Robinson 2001, 2003b, 2005a) concerning the effects of task complexity on: (a) language production; (b) interaction and uptake of information available in the input to tasks; and (c) individual differences-task interactions. Finally we summarize the findings of the empirical studies in this special issue which all address one or more of these predictions and point to some directions for continuing, future research into the effects of task complexity on learning and performance.

The goal of this study is to investigate the impact of manipulating the cognitive complexity of three different types of oral tasks on interaction. The study first considers the concepts of task complexity and interaction and then examines the specific studies that have looked at the effects of increasing task complex- ity on conversational interaction. In the experiment, learners of English as a foreign language organized into 27 dyads carry out three different types of tasks: a narrative reconstruction task, an instruction-giving map task, and a decision-making task. Two different versions of each task, one simple and one complex, are presented to learners in different sequences. Task complexity is manipulated along the degree of displaced, past time reference, the number of elements, and the reasoning demands. Audio recordings are transcribed and coded for interactional feedback, which is measured in terms of negotiation of meaning (i.e., confirmation checks, clarification requests, and comprehension checks), recasts, language-related episodes (LREs), and repairs, all of which have been described in the literature as being conducive to acquisition. Both parametric and non-parametric statistical tests are used. Results are discussed in the light of previous studies that have looked at the specific relationship between task complexity and interaction, attention models (Robinson 2001a, 2003, 2005, 2007b; Skehan and Foster 2001), and how different task types may variously affect the way interaction proceeds during task performance.

One of the problems with books which are relatively general in nature is that many of the individual contributions tend to be so narrow and specialised that only the author has any knowledge of (or interest in) the issues under discussion. At first sight this appears to be the case with Detecting Detection. Fortunately, however, first impressions are deceiving. Although the essays in the volume deal with writers as diverse and disparate as the Catalano-Spanish writer Juan Marse, the Bulgarian-French philosopher Julia Kristeva and the once-vaunted giant of English literature,Graham Greene, among numerous others, there is much to be enjoyed and learnt, even if some of the works under discussion are unfamiliar to the crime fiction reader and/or scholar to whom the book initially appears to be directed.

Non-standard deaccenting in Catalan: dubbing strategiesCatalan presents a strict pattern in terms of primary accent assignment: pitch prominence is associated with core clause final position (Vallduví 1992, 1994, 2008). Hence, unlike English (and Spanish, to a certain extent), Catalan cannot resort to accent-shift in situ to mark the focus. For instance, the sentence 'I don't HAVE the tickets' shows an accent-shift onto the verb have. In Catalan, this is not possible since the sequence 'les entrades', which follows the accented element ('tinc'), is forced to a dislocated (deaccented) position: 'No les TINC, les entrades'. Therefore, deaccented material following primary accent will appear in a dislocated position. This strict isomorphism between prosody and sentence structure restricts the type of strings that may be deaccented after the primary accent. Although verbal complements and adjuncts may be deaccented (i.e., dislocated, binding the corresponding clitic in the clause when required), linguistic material inside phrases is usually non-deaccentable. This paper identifies faulty prosodic patterns in texts dubbed into Catalan mainly from English, and at the same time provides a variety of syntactic strategies to properly transfer informationally-marked structures, which might trigger such non-standard patterns, onto the Catalan target text. Awareness of both the contrasts between languages and also the resources available in the inventory of the target language will improve the quality of the final product. The data are mainly from English texts dubbed into Catalan broadcast by TV3, the Catalan National Television Corporation.

The aim of this article is that of clarifying those issues of the analysis of the conditional structures in Italian which are more difficult to pin down. Once their «double nature» (temporal and modal) is established, attention is switched to the most conflicting aspects shown by the conditional structures («mixed» hypothetical periods, reported speech conditional, their liability to be substituted by a past tense, etc.) and the basis for a future stylistic analysis, of a more systematic kind, is put forward.

Certain aspects of Catalan pronominalization cannot be described without taking into account how informational content is mapped onto sentence structure. In this paper, some data previously considered in the literature (mainly from Todolí's 'Els pronoms') will be (re)analyzed considering the effects of information packaging articulation in Catalan in order to provide a more unified account. Information structure requirements are relevant for the analysis of the restrictions on pronominalization since, in Catalan, position in sentence structure reflects the pragmatic import of constituents. Viewing clitic binding as a result of a thematization procedure allows for a wider and more coherent approach to pronominalization, since proforms substitute not only for thematic material that is omitted but also for thematic material that is located in dislocated slots.

Corpus-based methodological tools and NTICs have recently become a commonplace in the teaching-learning of SL and FL, as they allow the language learner to become aware of the complexities of real language in use. As part of a teaching innovation project, GReLiC has recently developed a database of English clause patterns.
This study shows the lexico-grammatical information provided in the database as well as some of its pedagogical applications in the linguistics classroom.

Paraules clau Traducció del rus, Narcís Oller traductor, Lev Tolstoi al català, traducció indirecta The Narcis Oller's translation of Un llibre trist Abstract During creative crisis at the end of 19th century, Narcís Oller dedicated himself to translation. One of the translated works is Un llibre trist, a collection of three texts of Leo Tolstoy. The comparative study of translation and reception of these works in Europe, reveals that Oller used two intermediate sources for one of the texts, La mort d'Ivan Ilitx, and one source for the other two texts, Tres morts and La mort al camp de batalla. The comparison with the two intermediate sources also demonstrates the desire of Oller to do the translations well integrated into the Catalan linguistic and cultural system, to the point of causing the illusion that the texts are originals. This is mainly in the dialogues where the work of appropriation and rewriting can be clearly perceived. Orality incorporated by Oller in his dialogues approximates his translation to the original text of Tolstoy and distances it from intermediate French translations, which are stylistically much more neutral. Key words Translation from Russian, translator Narcís Oller, Leo Tolstoy in Catalan, indirect translation

This paper is an attempt to show that fronted nuclei, if not as abundant as in English, do nevertheless, along with other means of highlighting, play a significant role in Spanish intonation. Although the overriding tendency in Spanish is for right-edged tonicity, it would appear that nucleus fronting is common in Spanish in cases of strong contrast and anaphora, in highly emotional contexts (amazement, incredulity, impatience, exasperation, etc.), when there are interjections in final position (por favor 'please', gracias 'thank you), when there are nominal proforms after the verb whose identity is taken for granted, and in the case of words whose meaning is implicitly emphatic, rendering them likely to attract the focus (odiar 'to hate', todo 'all', mismo ' self', también 'also', tampoco 'neither', único 'only', es igual 'it's all the same', and deictics, like the demonstrative pronouns, éste, ésa 'this, that, etc.'). Keywords: prosody, tonicity, nucleus placement, Spanish and English sentence stress, fronted sentence stress.

The goal of this study is to investigate the role of working memory capacity in L2 attainment and performance. The study uses an L1 reading span task to measure working memory of a group of 59 high- intermediate/advanced learners of English, and a film retelling task to measure their oral production. The analysis first showed a moderate to high correlation between proficiency measured by a general proficiency test and learners' fluency, lexical complexity, and accuracy but not structural complexity on the retelling task. Secondly, no correlation was found between overall proficiency and working memory. Thirdly, a weak correlation was found between fluency and lexical complexity, and working memory. When the group was split into top and bottom levels of proficiency, moderate correlations were found between lexical complexity and working memory only for the high-proficiency group. The results are discussed in the light of previous research.

[eng] This article examines intergenerational language transmission based on a sample of secondary school students in two areas of Catalunya, where for the vast majority Catalan is both the first language and the language used. Based on a questionnaire distributed among immigrant students, the language parents spoke to each other and the language the students declared as their first language, were compared in order to determine any evidence of substitution. The comparison was also made between the first language declared and the language of (cultural) identification, in order to detect if intergenerational transmission could cease.

Previnc dues observacions eventuals.
